WOW! It has been 2 months since I updated my blog. It is a good thing that this is not a diary!

Hope that all is well and you enjoyed the somewhat spring-like day in NE Ohio if you live here. I am just looking for a bit of sunshine to brighten my mood. It is about this time of year that we all get anxious for warmer weather. I think my dogs feel the same way.

My classes at CIA are winding down and I have to say that I am disappointed. I have very much enjoyed the time I have spend there and the instructor and assistant are great! While I did learn a lot it was more of an open studio as there were a good number of students in the class. This was great as it affording you the opportunity to work on what you wanted to work on vs. what the instructor was teaching. I will going to look into a private lesson with the instructor as she is a very talented young lady!

In the class we learned about bezel setting and lost wax casting. I already knew how to bezel set but learned some tips and tricks along the way. As for casting, it was very fun as you create pieces out of wax and it turns into a lovely piece of metal jewelry. I did, however, learn that the pieces tend to be a bit more porous than when working with sheet and VERY heavy. I guess that is why we started out in bronze and not sterling. Art shows - I was particular which shows I entered this year as I really do not like to do a lot of them. Since I have a regular 9-5 job I like my weekends to make jewelry and do dog stuff. As I have mentioned in previous posts, it is not an easy job, setting up/tearing down for an art show. That being said, I am happy that I was accepted into the Chagrin Falls show - Art by the Falls in mid June! Such a pretty venue and the weather should be wonderful!

I will leave you with some spring jewelry trends which are reminiscent of the 70s LOVE the belt!

Hello!

Hope everyone is well! I had a very productive weekend. I cleaned out my pantry, cleaned out the drawers in my hutch and even managed to teach a class, work on a custom piece and create a new one! I love my weekends:)

Anyhow I wanted to talk a little about Etsy. I have to be honest, when I first signed on to sell on Etsy, I was not exactly impressed, I thought it was an inexpensive way to highlight and sell your jewelry, basically for those who do not have a website. Boy, was I wrong!

I basically posted every other week, did not relist much, did not get involved in the dynamics of Etsy for about a year and my sales reflected that. If I got lucky a customer who happened to see my new listing as I listed it and liked it, they purchased it. However, I did not "work" Etsy.

Well, the old saying you have to put in to get out is completely true with Etsy as well. Anyone who thinks that their store will do well just posting now and then and not getting involved in the culture of Etsy, will most likely not do well, in my opinion.

Now don't get me wrong, I do not have THAT many sales but the folks who "heart" my shop and items have increased tremendously! I have also been included in a lot of treasuries. All of this will help my exposure and help my sales down the road.

I would also like to talk a little about the comradery within Etsy. It is like a facebook for the artistically inclined! There are so many groups to get involved in. There is, of course, the group (s) that are in the vicinity of where you live, there are the groups who work in similar media as you do. This is great as you can get all sorts of tips! There is even a group for folks who are on late at night!! It is really neat!

Happy New Year

WOW! It sure has been a while since I posted on my blog. It was a busy holiday season, that is for sure! Hope everyone out had a wonderful holiday and are off to a great start in 2011!

I am very excited as I start classes at CIA, Cleveland Institute of Art at the end of this month. Jewelry, of course, going to brush up on some skills that I already have and learn more!! I am also very much looking forward to the Bead and Button show in June!!

Last weekend I was able to get several of my pieces professionally photographed as I am gearing up for the larger art shows this year and you know the saying - it takes money to make $. Well, I hope that is the case as this is surely not inexpensive. However, I think that they came out pretty well. I will post them so that you can judge for yourself!

I am, once again, working on my booth. That is something I just cannot get right. Not sure why either. If anyone has any suggestions, I am open to ALL of them!!

Anyhow, wanted to post to wish all a happy, heathy new year and share some of my pics.

Hope that this fall newsletter finds you well and ready for the holiday season. It is difficult for me to realize that it is almost that time of year again and that next year my only child will graduate from high school. I can remember when I was a senior like it was yesterday.

It has been a great year for Jewelry by Francine. I have attended many great shows, met a lot of new people and learned a great new technique at the Bead and Button show in Milwaukee WI. The most recent happening is getting accepted into the 2010 Progressive People’s Biennial. This is a juried show for Progressive employees to enter. All three of my entries were accepted. Jewelry Trends over the Decades

Jewelry has been reused and recycled over the decades. As the times change, so do the trends. Could you imagine having belly button rings back in the 20s?

I am going to focus on the 20s and 30s today. Enjoy!

The Roaring Twenties
As the neckline on shirts plunged to new depths, and hairstyles radically shortened into bobs, jewelry trends of the 1920s adjusted with the times with jewelers producing sportier, more casual accessories.

Synthetic plastics made their appearance in the Twenties, and showed up in jewelry cases, allowing for mass production and affordability. Bakelite, with its clay-like material that could be finished in a variety of colors, became a popular form of synthetic jewelry.

In the era, the definition of style transformed from expensive to affordable, from fancy to fun-and so did the jewelry. The martini may already have been invented, but the Roaring Twenties saw the dawn of cocktail jewelry.

American optimism took a hit as the booming economy faded into economic depression. Functionality was the word of the decade and fashion turned practical. Jewelry brought color and brightness to an otherwise gloomy state of affairs.

To liven up dull outfits, women turned to brilliant brooches found at bargain prices made from colorful enamel. In a desperate time, women were going to desperate measures to prove their social status, causing jewelry designers to grow bolder. And women piled it on, from dress clips in hair to the chunky necklaces that could be worn as bracelets. Bigger and bolder meant wealthier

Holiday Sales, Jewelry Parties and Art Shows

Hello -

Boy has it been a long time since I update this:( Where has the time gone?

As a retailer, I am heading into the busy season. This is time folks start shopping for holiday gifts and think about having home jewelry parties. Did I mention that this is a GREAT time for retailers and I LOVE it?

I have done a fair amount of art shows now and I must say that I much prefer doing home parties. Why you ask, well for one there is not the time commitment you have with a show, which can be 3-4 days. There is also the time you spend setting up. Outdoor shows are especially difficult, especially if you are alone. Those easy up tents are NOT easy to put up. Not sure who named them but it was not a woman. Lastly, when people attend an art show, they are not necessarily going to purchase jewelry or a painting or a sculpture. You get the picture - I do not have a captured audience like I do at a home party.

A home party is a more intimate setting too, you can interact with the customers to understand what they like and dislike. That being said, I have to promote my jewelry parties:)

Family Heirlooms

Hello -

Just got back from our annual trip to the beach! I love the beach, it is so relaxing and therapeutic. This year we went to St. Augustine, well actually, Crescent Beach which is just south of St. Augustine.

I was not sure what to expect but was pleasantly surprised. There is a lot of history in that city!! We were able to see some forts, visited several haunted locations and did a lot of walking on the beach. For those of you who did not know, St. Augustine is supposed to be one of the most haunted cities in the US. If you are a ghost hunter, this city is for you.

Since my Mother recently passed away, there is the dreaded chore of going through her belongings. The only positive light is that there are some heirlooms that bring back so many memories. I am going to talk about two pieces of jewelry which do just that!

My Grandmother, Frances, loved jewelry. I guess that in addition to being named after her, I took after her in that regard. Every birthday I would get a piece of jewelry. Of course being a kid, one never truly appreciates it.

There were always two pieces of jewelry which I loved, even as a child. My Mom wore more delicate jewelry. My Grandmother, on the other hand, liked bold pieces. You will definitely see the difference in their style below.

This ring was my Grandmother's. This ring is 14k gold and topaz. I have loved this ring since I was about 14 and started wearing really large jewelry. I was allowed to wear this only on special occasions when I was young.

This bracelet was my Mother's. My Dad gave this to her. It is 14k gold, garnets and pearls. I remember liking this bracelet since I was very young. Maybe it was the saying, maybe it was the color, but I always knew I loved it.

As you can see, they had two totally different styles. My Mother was very petite and would look silly wearing the ring:)

New Chapter

Hello -

I has been a while and I really realized how much I miss writing this blog - even if it is just me who gets enjoyment out of it:)

It has been a while because as a lot of you know, I lost my Mom, Carol last week to renal failure. She had just turned 72 on July 4th.

My Mom was a tiny little women with a lot of spunk!! She weighed all of 80 pounds when she died but was always tiny. It is a shame I did not take after her in that respect:(

My Mom is responsible for the person I am today. She gave me the confidence to know that I can do anything I put my mind to. She was my support system. Even when I had doubts she was there to keep my fears at bay.

When I was in 7th grade I so wanted to be a cheerleader. Let me tell you, I was not looking too much like a cheerleader. I was awkward and insecure. My Mom coached me for months. She even helped me learn how to do a back handspring in the backyard. Keep in mind she was a tiny lady!

It was because of her that I made cheerleading and was even captain one year!! It was at the point where I knew if I made up my mind to do something I could!

I have always loved dogs since I was a little girl and for my 16th birthday I so wanted a "real" dog. We always had miniature poodles and while I LOVE them now, when I was a kid I was always teased about having the kind of dog. However, there was a reason I had poodles. It was because I was allergic to dogs and my Mom knew how much I love dogs so she got me three I could live with.

So, for my 16th birthday I wanted a big dog - that dog was Duke, the largest of the terriers, an Airedale!
Now for those of you who know what an airedale is like know what a change this was from our little poodles:)

However, my Mom put up with the antics, the digging, the jumping ,etc because I loved him and wanted him.

Christmas Eve in my house was sacred and talk about food WOW, steak, lobster tails, rice balls, sauerkraut balls. That was the most favorite night of the year and it as not because of the presents.

There are so many memories of my Mom I could go on and on.

Mom, thank you for being my Mom and for helping me have a wonderful life. I love you and I know that you are watching down on me and Rachael:)

Juries and photos

Hello -

I have been doing a bit more research on how juries select artist to be in their shows, what they look for and who ultimately they choose. In doing so, I was able to find out some interesting information about the dynamics of the art show industry so to speak.

The jurors look for craftsmenship in addition to that WOW factor or uniqueness. Some artists try to pass off
a lack of craftmanship as being different but there, in fact, a difference. Is that piece going to be around in 5 years, am I going to like it in 5 years?

A trend in the art shows is an emphasis on jewelry and fashion. Boy - who knows that better than I do!!! This poses somewhat of a problem for artwork which is typically purchased by couples. For example, paintings or sculptures. I know I would not invest in an expensive piece of artwork without my husband:)

Because the industry is so unbalanced when it comes to the type of art, with jewelry being the largest category in many instances, it is so important to have pictures which will stand out for the jury.

Pictures - WOW are these important to a jury as it is the only representation of your artwork the jurors have.
I have learned that the same background is very important and that it must show the craftmanship. Unlike retail pics which should show all of the necklace so that the customer can see what she is purchasing.

There are also opportunities to see how jurors jury shows - this is an excellent opportunity to get into the minds of jurors to see what the, in fact, look for, what is important to them, I, myself, am going to attend the open jury in Columbus, OH in Feburary!

Summer Shows

Hello!

Happy 4th of July! We should all treasure our independence today and throughout the year!

I have been busy prepping for shows and trying to improve my set up. Yesterday I added some fun accents which acted like swags hanging from the tent. I thought it looked more inviting. I finally have to bite the bullet and purchase a banner:( These can get quite expensive but think it is necessary at this point. Good thing, I know exactly what I want so I am in the process of getting prices now.

Summer shows can get quite hot! I am not complaining but boy sitting in the heat and humidity can be quite uncomfortable - not to mention dangerous at times with the storms. Yesterday was not bad at all. Really did not get really hot until we were tearing down our set up around 5pm and the morning was quite lovely:)

Speaking of storms, those of you newbies out there need to invest in or create some tent weights. Merely having the test up with no stakes (in grass) or some sort of weights weighing down your tent is just not safe. All you need is a strong wind to come by and that is a recipe for disaster. We created PCV pipe and filled them with concrete, work quite well!

Last weekend, however, was a different story. After I put up my set up I felt I needed a show and my hair, well that is another story!!! Last weekend it rained as well, which was not that bad as it was not a torrential downpour and felt that it cooled down the 90+ degree temperature. We tore down our set up JUST in time. We were in the car for about 10 minutes and along came, what we thought, were tornado strength winds. We felt that our car was going to be lifted up and blown away. WOW that was really scary. Thank goodness nothing more came of up, but hope that the rest of the artists as the show were OK.

So these art shows are not for the weak of heart - it is hard work setting up, tearing down, being nice to people all day as they pick up your art and put it down with dirty hands and don't buy it:( However, even if it is a slow day, I think of it as live advertising and that one day more sales will come because of it!

Bead and Button is Over

Hello -

What a nice weekend and get away I had in Milwaukee! While it was a quick trip, about 30 hours, it was very relaxing and I learned a lot! It is not often that I get away completely alone - no dogs, kids or husband. It was nice to do what I wanted to do, when I wanted to do it:)

My instructor, Gwen Bernacker did a nice job teaching myself and about 8 other students the technique of Keum boo. I have posted a picture of the earrings I created. I must say, I am happy with them. It is not all of the time that I am excited about the very first piece of make of a new technique.

I have a very small, simple kiln being shipped to me so that I will be able to put old on EVERYTHING:) Well I would not go that far with the gold prices the way they are, but at least on stuff until my gold foil runs out. Talk about recycling???

Having a kiln also means that I will be able to do PMC which is exciting. I also purchased a book from an artist I met at the show, Katie McKinnon. What a nice lady and her book is just great. Just started reading it today. What a great resource for metal clay. There is really no limit to what you can make out of PMC, that is why it is so exciting!

Getting ready for my 1st outdoor summer show, let's hope that the weather cooperates as I have never done a show in the rain. Good thing that silver does not melt:)

Bead and Button Show

Hello!

Boy it has been a while - sorry about that!! Summer is a busy time for everyone, especially is you do art shows and dog shows:) I do both!!

To catch you up on what is happening - I just accepted another position within the same company. I start tomorrow! I am very sad to leave all of the great people I worked with for the prior 4.5 years but also excited to work with some new people and learn a totally different set of skills.

On the dog front - Piper took BOB at the Kalamazoo shows last weekend - YEAH Piper! We only showed one day but it was a 4 day show - wishing I stayed for more:(

Rachael is officially done with school on Tuesday and she also got a new job!!!! Bob Evans YUM!!!! Say goodbye to McDonalds where she has worked for the prior two years!!!

On the jewelry front - I have not had much time creating new things, but I am working on a pretty pink bracelet - will look great for summer with a nice tan hand/arm:) I know sun is bad, but I just love having that glow- makes you feel so good!!

I am going to the Bead and Button show this week - YEAH!! I have had this trip booked for over 6 mos and it is finally here. It started out when I was looking for a class on learing Keum Boo. I found a location in CA but that was a little pricey considering plain fair so I was told to check out Bead and Button in Miwaukee, WI and sure enough they offered a class.

This is the largest consumer bead show in the world but don't the the word bead scare you as it has everything and so many classes. I wanted to take several more but I was too late in registering:(

Teaching

Hello!

It has been a while but things have been crazy! Good crazy but not a lot of computer time. Hope all of the Mom's out there had a great day. Rachael got me three pretty balloons and a gift card to one of my favorite restaurants. Thanks Rachy!!!

Well today I taught a jewelry class for the first time. I have a training background so it is not the first time I stood up in front of people teaching but the 1st time I tough someone how to make jewelry. This was a fun class as it involved several skills which 2 out of the 4 did not have. Overall, it went well and everyone finished their initial ring with a pearl dangle.

I am a huge fan of soliciting feedback and I asked the students if they would have liked to see anything different or have me go at a different pace and everyone said "no." In looking back, there are a few things I would have done differently but the students probably did not know that:)

I have another class schedule at the end of May which is a totally different skill set so it should be fun!!!

Advertising/Passion!!!!

Hello!
I know, I know I have promised to talk about diamonds, however, I have not had a lot of time to put anything together and I promised to update this once a week. Therefore, I am going to talk about advertising.

I recently was featured on My Give Away Today. It is a way of advertising where you not only pay the host but also give away either a piece of jewelry or a gift certificate. I chose a gift certificate, this way the winner could choose what she wants!

I just found out who the winner is and I just emailed her the prize. I hope she enjoys what she purchases!
I also hope that she passes the word around about my site. If , of course, she is happy with her gift.

This all leads me to the question - is this type of advertising worth it?

While this may not be all that much $ for a small business it can get costly. While I did not generate any sales from this campaign, I did get 55 more fans on Facebook (or likes) This is something that is truly priceless as I post a lot of my new pieces on FB and therefore, get a lot of exposure.

Also, it has only been a few days since my feature so I am confident that it will generate sales in the future.

The drawback about doing this type of advertising is that I am now a target for other folks who have these types of blogs. I have received at least 3 e-mails from other bloggers intersted in featuring my site. I told them that I wanted to give it a few weeks before I made a decision on what I wanted to do.

This is a part of the business I truly enjoy, I actually enjoy everything expect the tax part and thankfully that happens only two times per year.

Enjoy life and do want you are truly passionate about as life is short. My husband lost a dear friend this week at a far too young age - left a wife and two teenagers behind. Do not fret about the small things, take time to slow down and play with your dogs, read that book or just sit outside and smell the flowers!! I need to take my own advise. Until next time...

Tucson

Hello!

Hope everyone is well. Sorry for the late post, but I was in Tucson at a conference for work. I went from 90 degree weather to 40 degree weather in 7 hours.

Having never been to AZ, I thoroughly enjoyed my visit. The weather was absolutely wonderful!! Warm during the day and cool in the mornings and after the sun went down. We did a lot of outside sightseeing.

The first day we went to the desert museum which was recommended by the concierge at the hotel. What a good suggestion! I was even later able to identify a snake I saw outside of my door at my hotel!!! It was not poisonous:)

The food at the hotel, El Conquistador, was outstanding. That is saying a lot for conference food since it is difficult to serve hot food for that many people. Kudos to them!!!

The conference was also great! Took away a lot of great ideas this time - super excited to implement them. Hopefully all of the attorneys will think the same way...

I promised that I would talk about the April birthstone, but I want to gather some additional info before posting on that, plus I wanted to talk about my little trip and share some pics!

Oh - I also got a lot of ideas for jewelry while I was bored in a few of the sessions LOL!!!

Hello!

I have had a wonderful week off. I was able to get so much done. However, the week flew! Retook a ton of pics on my site and created some really fun new pieces. (see pic below) I also had lunch with a few friends, helped my Mom out and went to the zoo! Hope you all had a great week.

I am very excited about an opportunity that presented itself to me and it involves, of course, jewelry. I now am able to post on a very popular jewelry blog and my first post was published today. http://blog.jewelstruck.com/

What Size Should I Get?

Happy Friday! It is the 1st day of my staycation and I got a lot accomplished - even starting on cleaning out my closet:)

Before I jump into jewelry, I want to talk a little bit about my puppy, Piper. She is just such a character! At the part last night she got to go into the creek and retrieve a golf ball which thrown to her by a little girl (frient) she met at the park. When Piper could not find the ball in the water (it was sort of deep) she gave up but instisted that the little girl had more balls in her pocket and stared at her for forever hoping that she would, once again, throw something in the water. Let me tell you, it was hard to pull her away from that little girl:)

I have been getting a lot of questions about sizing for rings and bracelets so I thought I would share some of my knowledge with you.

First of all I have ring and bracelet sizers on my website - take a look - no you do not have to purchase something to use them. http://www.jewelrybyfrancine.com/sizingfr.html

Rings - Do you go a size up or a size down if you are in between sizes? Answer: A size up. Our body swells depending on water retention and if you purchase a size larger you can always wear it on another finger. You may also purchase a guard at a jewelry store.

Bracelets - While bracelets may go around your wrists, some are meant to hang a bit longer and fall on the hand than others. On my site I will indicate if a particular bracelet should be worn loose or fitted. However, it is generally up to taste of the person who is purchasing the bracelet. If I specify that the bracelet should be worn fitted, then you should typically add .5 inch or less to your wrist size. The bracelet and bangle sizers are a great tool to determine what size to order on all other bracelets.

Necklaces/Chains - The most common length necklace/chain size is 18 inches. This length chain can accomodate many different styles of charms or pendants and in a necklace, it typically hits in the right spot it shoes when you wearing most shirts. This is also the most flattering length for the general public.

16 inches - is more of a choker length and looks good on a person with a longer, thinner neck.

20 inches - is, of course, a longer chain and I think looks great with our Love Tags and personalized pieces and is becoming more popular as it can be worn over most shirts.

Mokume Gane

Hello!

It has been a busy week and boy am I tired but I wanted to update this as I truly enjoy doing it.

I am going to talk a bit about one of my favorite materials to work with - mokume gane. I first saw it in one of my jewelry magazine and I was HOOKED! It is such a fascinating metal as no two pieces are alike. In addition, there are so many different metals which can be used to create mokume gane.

Mokume is a mixed metal laminate with a distinctive pattern. Mokume is a Japanese term and it comes from late 1600's - 1800's when the Samuri sword was transitioned from being tool for fighting to a symbol of the warrier class. Mokume gane translates into a wood grain metal. The lamination process involves many layers, sometimes, 10-30 layers of copper, gold, sterling, and platinum between steel blocks and heating them in a kiln allowing the layers to fuse not melt. The billet is them forged and rolled to the desiured thickness. The patterns are created by hand carving down through the layers.

That is a background on this fascinating metal. I have worked with two patterns, random and river and have only worked with Sterling silver and copper. I have attached my latest ring which was created with Mokume gane. Enjoy!

Resin Jewelry/Loss of a Friend

Hello!

Hope everyone is doing well on this first day of Spring! It is a bit chilly here and partly cloudy but I am NOT complaining!

Piper is at her first dog show in KY and she took the point yesterday - YEAH. She also took the point again today!!! I love my dogs:)

Well over the past week I learned how to create resin jewelry. It was a huge hit - all of the pieces I created were sold. It is a really fun, ecomonical way to wear fun, colorful jewelry! I started out using base metal or metal which is coated with silver, however, I am going to work my way up to Sterling!

Resin is really fun as it acts like a picture frame for your subject. So far I have worked with paper and beach glass. I would like to start adding things to my pieces, beads, stones, etc but I seem to like the simplicity of the fun patterns on the paper. Stay tuned.

I also wanted to take a moment to reflect on a old friend who died this week - Sharon Pullar. Sharon was just a wonderful, carefree person. I do not think she ever had a care in the world. They found her body in her home this week we do not yet know how she died.

While I have not kept in touch with Sharon over the past 25 years, looking at pictures posted on FB bring back all of the HS memories we had. As someone posted on FB yesterday, heaven is now laughing. How true. RIP Sharon Pullar - I will miss you:)

With the arrival of March I cannot help but think of spring and warmer weather. However, in Ohio we are not out of the woods just yet!

Your Favorite Piece of Jewelry

Hi!

I thought of a great idea so we could all share a picture or a short description of our favorite piece of jewelry as a child. For example, remember those Avon pins which opened and had cologne on the inside? They came in all sorts of colors and shapes. I LOVED those!! I think partially because my Mom never ordered from Avon so like anything else, you always want what you don't have.

Spring??

Hello!

It actually rained today in Ohio. Can you believe it? While I do not like rain because of my dogs tracking in the mud it creates, the plus side is it reminds me that spring is just around the corner:) I love spring! Spring means dog shows, walks, and the beginning of art show season. I truly believe that the sun makes people happier!!

Anyhow the website is going well! I am trying to become proficient in adding pieces correctly. I have the pictures down and the descriptions, just working on the shipping and inventory section. I will get there soon!

On the dog front I finally feel more confortable grooming my Piper. She is a new breed to me and requires hand stripping which I have never done before and quite frankly, feel bad doing to the poor dog. I need to get over that as she still loves me when she jumps down from the table!

Oh - I did want to mention the latest jewelry craze, cold connections or rivets. I have several pieces available where I have incorporated this technique. I like the look as it gives the jewelry a more finished look. I did create a really cute pair of earrings but I sold them and cannot locate the picture. They truly showed what riveting looked like as they were mixed metal. I am going to post two pieces where I used rivets so you can see what it looks like! The necklace is called SHAPES and the ring is called 10 o clock.

New Adventures

Hello everyone!

Well it is ALMOST perfect. The site, that is. What a pain staking process, reading, reviewing, re-reading over and over and I still seem to find things that are not perfect:( Overall, I am happy with the site and cannot wait until I learn how to update it myself so that I can add all of my new pieces!

Valentine's day is this weekend - doing anything fun? I truly have no idea what is planned for me as I did not plan anything for my hubby. We go out on New Year's eve so I guess we can stay in on Valentine's day, the other "big night out."

Oh - I am so excited as I am going to the Bead and Button show in June. It is in Milwaukee, WI. I am STOKED. I will be like a kid in a candy store and I am taking a class on how to do Keum Boo - WOW it is sooo pretty. Here is an example and some more info on what it is and how it came to be:

Sorry it has been a while as my hard drive crashed on my laptop. Seriously thinking about taking the leap to a MAC BOOK! Anyhow can you believe it is February already? My husband bought me some pretty red tulips yesterday which so remind me of warmer weather. We are headed in that direction:)

2010 Resolutions

Happy New Year all!!

Another decade is upon us and this is my 44th year of life - WOW hard to believe. My daughter, Rachael, will graduate from HS in 2011 so one more year and my husband and I are empty nesters. This new stage of life brings on new joys and dissappointments.

Not that 43 - almost 44 is old but there are good things to being young - mostly physical. Becoming wiser is a plus of getting older. Knowing what to expect in different circumstances and how to deal with certain people. All of which my 17 y/o daughter cannot do. On the other hand, she can do WAY more physically than I can do. This does not mean that I am old lady like but after your body has been around almost 44 years it starts to need a little maintenance from time to time.

Ok enough about age. I have posted a pic of my puppy, Piper. I have truly grown to adore this dog. This is a new breed for me and I have not been dissappointed. If I take a step - Piper takes a step. If I smile - she wags her tail. She is very in tune with me. We can start showing now as she turned 6 mos old on Christmas. I think I am going to wait until the spring to enter shows since the weather in OH can be so unpredictable. I will keep everyone apprised!

My other girls, Shea and Cindy are getting old. Shea will be 10 in Feb and Cindy will be 10 in August. Cindy is my heart dog - we have a mutual understanding of what she wants based on her look and her head bobs She is the dog I will go to the end of the universe to keep alive as long as I can.

She recently had her teeth cleaned and a geriatric panel (blood work) as well as a growth removed from her shoulder. The doctor thought it looked cancerous, however, it was not even precancerous. This was the best present anyone could give me despite the very expensive - $800 bill from the vet. As they say - that is priceless:)

Shea acts like a 10 mo old puppy not a 10 y.o puppy and is Piper's playmate. Cindy does not think she is a dog and absolutely will not play with another animal:) Shea has IBD (inflammatory bowel disease) which is under control through diet. She also has minor arthritis for which she gets Rymidal when I see her suffering as it has too many negative side affects to give her everyday. Shea is a love and has never met a stranger. She is also my stalker - she will stay out all night hunting for little and not so little creatures.

So needless to say, when I die, I want to come back as one of my dogs. They are treated like princesses! Well, all expect Ch. Magic Cinderella Story SH - she is a REAL one:)

Almost Christmas

Well the big day is a week away and my tree is finally up! Thanks to Tom for putting it up - all I have to do is decorate. That is the fun part. Hopefully he will also help be take it down.

Winter is Here!

Hello!

I am certainly not complaining but boy is in bitter cold here in Akron, Ohio. This is, however, the 1st winter storm and there is not snow so I am happy! I was able to take my puppy for a walk today which made me feel a bit better getting out in the fresh air. Staying home for as long as I have been home gets old. I have a new respect on folks who are home bound - that is for sure!

The big dog show is in Cleveland this weekend. It is a four day cluster so it is typically a big show but not for my two breeds and Piper is still too young to show. She does not turn 6 mos until Christmas! This is fine with me as she needs a lot of work on the grooming side she is a little mop!!! She is, however, doing well on the handling side - once she knows she cannot get away with things she is very good. She is very hard headed!

Christmas decorations - I did not put them up for the 1st time in FOREVER. They are down from the attic but just no energy to put them up. Plus, they will only be up for a few weeks. That seems like a lot of work to have them up for that length of time.

Just wanted to post a few pics of some pieces that I have created recently. I have a new obsession - Mokume-Gane - The earrings and ring are examples. It is mixed metals this pic is sterling and copper but the possibilities are endless!!! These earrings sold after 5 mins of being listed on Etsy so I guess other folks like it too! Enjoy!!!

Missing Phone

Good Morning!

I am doing a bit better slowly. Boy as you get older surgery gets more difficult. It is just so hard for me doing nothing! I think I want to do something but get very tired and then wind up laying on the couch for the rest of the day. Oh well I am grateful to have this time off to heal.

I did hear back from the hospital about the theft. As a matter of fact, I heard from 3 different people which is reassuring to me. Unfortunately, they will not pay for a replacement as it was personal property which was not medically necessary. I disagree - people go crazy in the hospital and need distraction:) Anyhow I will be replacing my phone as soon as I am well enough to leave the house - No, I have not left my house in 1 week WOW hard to believe it has already been 1 week since my surgery.

On the jewelry front, have had a lot of Etsy and on-line orders. Very happy with this holiday season - Thanks to all!!

Hello -

Hope that everyone is having a wonderful day today. I just got home from the hospital. I had an operation on Wednesday. Needless to say, I am not feeling great and I cannot really do much else except type.

I really feel sorry for my puppy, Piper. She needs a much needed walk which I cannot give her. Maybe I can convince Tom into taking her on one tomorrow.

Well I wanted to share with you an unfortunate happening last night at the hospital. Since I did not know would be staying overnight, I did not bring anything except the clothes on my back. After I found out that I would be staying the night, I told Tom to being back my i-phone and a few magazines so that I would have something to do except watch TV.

He did and within 2 hours the phone disappeared! Before security and later the police were called I double and triple checked with myself and the nurse on call. Nothing!

I just find this horrific! I am in much discomfort, think I am in a safe environment and my personal property is taken! I am going to send a letter to the president of the hospital as I do not feel that I should have to pay for a replacement.

My router crashed and I just got my laptop back last night! YEAH. I have had a lot of computer issues this year.

So I need your help! I am redoing my home page on my website and need your ideas. I need a catchy phrase that draws people in and making the layout very interesting. Any ideas?

I have started my marketing campaign. I called a few hair salons to see if they would be interesting in having a trunk show. I am also posting more on FB. Don't get me wrong, I have had a great holiday season, but want to do more (always)

Well Rachael turns 17 tomorrow - so hard to believe. She is so grown up and so independent. Those of you with small kids - enjoy your time. I remember always wishing she would get bigger so that I could take take her out without worrying about changing diapers or that she could talk to me and carry on a conversation. Just enjoy every minute as they grow up so quickly:(

Hello - Halloween just isn't what it used to be when Rachael was younger. We used to make a big deal out of getting her a costume. We would let her pick out the costume at John's Fun House (which has since closed) and then go out to dinner. These days Fridays and Saturdays with the family are non-existent and as far as a costume goes, well check out my FB to see the pics!

It takes holidays to really remind me how fast things happen. Rachael will be 17 in 2 weeks. Seems like just yesterday I took her to kindergarten. Speaking of time - I will hit the 20 year mark at my company. I basically spent the majority of my adult life with this company. I was married, had a child, and many other milestones while working here. Here's to another 15 more:)

Well I am somewhat sentimental today - not sure why but I hope that everyone had a great Halloween. I have posted a picture of my little princess Cindy!!

Hello!

I have been think a lot about marketing lately. I have never hired anyone because it is just me and I do not exactly have a marketing budget. However, for the upcoming year, in order to solicit some new business, I may look into it.

I was contacted several months ago by someone and at the time I did not have time to discuss anything with her. So I told her to call me back in September and no call and I lost her e-mail. Does anyone have any suggestions? Don't get me wrong - I pound the pavement (well not literally). I send a lot of e-mails and make a lot of calls until I get either a YES or a NO. I send out mass e-mails to prior customers and folks who have showed interest at shows, but I want to do more.

Well I look forward to your suggestions. I have posted some cute pics of my "girls" and a new piece which I am just in love with - I cannot wait to wear it!!!

Getting Better

I really should not be blogging I have to be at a wedding at 11am and I am not even dressed! Oh well I have priorities.

My Little Bailey

It is with a very heavy heart that I tell you that I have made a difficult decision to put my little Bailey to sleep tomorrow. Bailey will be 15 on May 5, 2010.

I have always said that when she loses sight in her other eye that would be the determining factor and today, she did just that. She is bumping into things is afraid to go outside and with the other girls in the house - it is just not fair. Bailey is also deaf and has cushings disease both of which she has lived with for the past 3 years.

You all know how much I love my dogs but little Bailey was so special. She was not a show dog, she was not well bred, she was just that little black dog that was given to us almost 13 years ago. She was the best dog money could buy - and she was FREE!!
Bailey was Rachael's first dog. She was there for her first soccer game, her first day of school. Rachael used to take her for walks around the block and boy did everyone know the two of them:)

Bailey introduced me to the world of dogs. If it were not for Bailey, I would never have Shea, Cindy or Piper. By they way - she was quite the little agility dog:)

Bailey introduced me to so many wonderful people over the past 13 years. There are too many to name.

Bailey was a therapy dog. Boy did she love that - she got to lick all of the crumbs off of the floor:) She gave so much joy to the residents of the nursing home. Vets could not believe that she was a Cocker Spaniel as she did not have a mean bone in her body! (well maybe she didn't like that other Bailey down the street so much:)

Bailey never needed a leash - she would get a few feet in front of me and turn around to make sure I was still there.

Bailey was my shadow - if I moved, she moved.

I could go on and on about the memories that little black dog helped me create. However, the most important one is that she helped me understand what unconditional love is and what it feels like to be adored by a little black dog.

Bailey - I love you and if there is a heaven for dogs - you will definitely be there.

Happy October. First I want to thank everyone who booked a party. I am so busy I cannot accept any more this year:) I am very excited about these parties as I LOVE to do parties close to the holiday. It is so festive.

Hi!

WOW I cannot believe that it is almost October. Fall is my favorite season but like spring, it is too short! I am so glad that my Piper came now instead of the dead of winter. I know they say it is easier to housebreak a puppy in the winter but who cares! It is nice leaving her with all of her baby sitters outside for a few hours.

Speaking of Piper, she is a really good puppy. A little stubborn but nothing that I cannot handle. She does not like it when you are mad at her so I think she will be very eager to please.

The rest of the year in terms of jewelry is BUSY! 4 home parties!!! This is great and I am busy making some new pieces and more fall/winter pieces so stay tuned!

Well I am off to socialize Piper over Linda's house. She gets to see a cat and 2 Vizslas:)

Hello,

Sitting her watching a show on 911. Wow - what an aweful day in history. I think that everyone remembers where they were when they 1st found out about it - I sure do.

My prayers go out to all of the family and friends of the victims as I am sure that they are still grieving to this day.

Getting ready for the Rocky River Fall Arts Festival which will take place next Saturday. Will be very busy making more pieces as I recently had a HUGE wholesale order. While I am thrilled and honored it means that I have to make more. Hey - I could think of other things worse to do:)

Puppy front - Piper is a good dog. The only issue I have is housebreaking. I think because it has been so nice outside and she is spending so much time outside, she is getting confused. Oh well just like Rachael - she will not be 5 going to kindergarten in diapers:) Puppy class starts on Sunday but we have already starting socializing her. Took her to work today in the parking garage she had fun with Shea and loved everyone she met:)

It's Back!!

Phew - I was able to pick up my laptop from Best Buy in the nick of time! I am so excited! It's not like I do not have enough to do. I now have 4 dogs, one daugther, one husband, I work full time and make jewelry. Oh, and now I have to socialize Piper and take her to class. I love puppies it is such a great way to meet people too! The only think I HATE is housebreaking UGH!!!!!

Well I wanted to put a pic of Piper taken today at about 10 weeks. She is just a little cutie - very different than my Brittanys-much more mellow which is just awesome!

I also wanted to post a few pics of a bracelet that a gave a facelift too. If something does not sell after a certain period of time, I redo it. It has worked everytime and I like the way this simple bracelet turned out:) I did it today with a pair of earrings that were created with ear wires that were just too thick so I re-soldered a thinner piece of silver to them.

I am almost ready for the art show need to tag my necklaces and some earrings and I will be all set! Hope the weather holds up.

Hi - Happy Friday! Boy these weeks having really been flying by. Finally got to meet the Jimmy last night. Jimmy is this nice, very tall 6 ft 7 in, young man who has captured Rachael's heart?? Oh who knows it has been so long since I was 16 that I really forgot what it feels like to be that young. I gave her a choice. If she wanted to go out with him last night she would allow me to meet him. She was grounded for some, not so nice, behavior earlier in the week, You are probably asking yourself why I had not met him up to this point. Well, in today's world kids talk to each other and it is evidently not cool for the parents to meet this person.

Ok to on to the reason for my post.

Hi,

I am totally into pearls and leather these days. It just reminds me of the beach and warm weather!

I am also very happy that I could donate a piece of my jewelry to a great cause which is going on today. It is a benefit for the Western Reserve Hospice - what a great cause! Hope whoever wins the pendant in the raffle enjoys it!

Hi!

I am back after a vacation and 2 weeks without my laptop. I must say that it was nice not having the stress of having to take pics, send pics, and update my site. However, it's back to reality:(

We had a lovely, relaxing vacation. I have posted some fun pics on FB and a one really cool one here. Typically people post sunny beach shots but I took this one just before the storm and thought it was so awesome! It is fitting as the picture to the left is called "storm.".

I have some great news on the jewelry front. I was accepted into the Rocky River Arts Festival on September 19! Stop by if you have a chance. This means that I have to get a tent as I have borrowed them in the past and should also probably get a sign of sorts. MMM what started out to be a "free" show may not be free afterall!

I have also created some new pieces. I have posted them. My new addiction is pearls and leather. Stay tuned for that!

I also have a great lead for wholesale jewelry with a great little shop in Destin - keep your fingers crossed:)

Things could also be worse

Hi,

Received a call yesterday around 6:30 pm from the Summit County Sherriff's department. Guess what? Rachael was in a car accident. It was a minor, rear end accident with no injuries but she has no collision coverage and you know what happens to premium when you report an at fault accident? Oh well, at least she was not injured and hopefully she learned a lesson. She will have to go to court as in the state of OH a minor must go to court if involved in an accident or receives a citation.

I was very happy this week when a customer wanted me to create a pendant and left it up to me to design it. The only characteristic she wanted was that it was to be a longer pendant. She was so happy the way it turned out. What a great feeling it was to see how happy she was with her new piece. I have attached a picture of it. I am, of course, naming it after the customer and friend - DARCY!

Weather is a bit dreary today which is good because then I do not feel guilty working in my studio and staying inside to clean.

Summer

Hi,

It's hard to believe that it is already the 4th. But what about this weather - Rachael said today it felt like Thanksgiving break. Thought that was sort of true. Oh well it's looking better later today in Cleveland.

I thought in celebration of the 4th I would post some summer pieces from my collection. The red and blue necklace is The 4th of July and the bracelet is A Little Piece of Summer. The pendants are beach glass where a hole was drilled so that they can be worn as a pendant. Thanks Julie for these:)

Did not make it to the Artfest last weekend but I heard it was awesome! I am, however, headed there today. Wish I had more $ to spend as there are so many great things to purchase and everything is hand made - even better!

I also wanted to share some great news. I sent a pair of earring to one of our local anchors in Cleveland and she responded to me this week. She loved them and showed them off to everyone in the newsroom. She also said that she is always looking for unique pieces to wear on the air and that my site is now one of her favorites!! WOW I was so excited.

Still waiting to hear about the Rocky River art show they extended the deadline due to so many jewelry people entering - they wanted to get different mediums. Keep your fingers crossed.

On the puppy front - I have received several pics of the puppies there are 3 boys and 3 girls so we will see what happens as I get 3rd pic girl. I really like the dam of this litter though!

Getting Older

Hello,

Boy did this week fly by! Hard to believe that it is already Friday. This week I turned a year older - while I really do not like to talk about my age - I do think that with maturity comes wiseness (yes that is a word, I just looked it up.) It is just very unfortunate that I did not have this wiseness about me when I was a 22 years old. Boy would I have done things differently! Since I am definitely no where near 22 anymore I will move on.

This weekend is the Boston Mills Art Fest - I did not enter as it is very political and to be honest, I did not want to sit at a show for another 2 days after last weekend. Don't get me wrong, I truly love selling my wares but 2 weekends in a row can be a bit overwhelming. Maybe I would think differently if I had to "live" on my jewelry income. I do, however, have a completely different view of what artists have to do to make a living WOW - what a lot of work.

Nothing too new with Rachael - has been staying out of trouble lately. Did have a scare last week when she dislocated her shoulder at her 1st soccer practice but she is recovering nicely.

On the puppy front - the puppies were born yesterday 3 boys and 3 girls. They are just adorable!!! A bit larger than my Brittanys as little puppies. Since I get third pick hopefully she is show quality if not, I will have to wait for another litter as I just do not want a male. My three girls, Shea, Bailey and Cindy are doing very well!

Hubby is good - everyday I appreciate him more and more after I see what is out there. He is truly my supporter of all of my hobbies and job. Please do NOT tell him this!!!!!! :)

Greek Festival

Hi~

Well it's over! What an interesting experience - 4 days at a festival. Not sure if I would do it again to be honest. While I did well I am the kind of person needs to be busy and for most of the day, at least until 6 it was slow. So I attached my new "moo" tags to some of my pieces. After 6 however, it got really busy. Overall, I did well and have no more biz cards (I guess that is a good thing)

Well not much else to say or show although my new bangle did really really well over the weekend *(I love them) great to wear multiples of and they are gold and silver. My copper pieces also sold!!

Hello!

Sorry it's been a while! Thanks to those 2 people who voted in my jewelry poll!!!!

A few updates on the home front. We get a frantic call from Rachael on Saturday night around 9:30 pm. She filled her car up $32.00 and it leaked out all over the gas station and into the street. The gas station had to call the fire department and the gas station was closed for like 2 hours. We then had to have the car towed. So $150 later - the car is currently being repaired at the dealership. UGH!!! The good news, however, is that the dealership will foot the bill!!

Puppy update - well it is official - just mailed the deposit today. She will be born on the 24th of 25th of June. I am hoping the 24th as then we will share a birthday!! How much fun is that.

So you may be asking yourself - what kind of dog? While many of you might think you know, I am in the mood for a change. My new puppy will be a GWP - German Wirehaired Pointer. I know, I know why a change - for one, the shedding. I absolutely adore my Brittanys but am really really tired of the white hair EVERYWHERE. I also really really wanted a Cindy grand daughter but it does not look like that is going to happen. So this is the route I went. I will keep you apprised.

If you are in the neighborhood, stop by! I created this really cute sign for my table so that people know who I am. What do you think? It really looks better in person. I painted on a canvas with acrylic paints and it it stands on an easal. A lot less expensive then getting a sign made and sort of cute - fits in with my hand stamped jewelry.

Oh and I should blog about Tom, my husband. He got a bit paranoid when he snooped on my FB and asked why I did not indicate that I was married in my profile. Hey - at least I did not indicate that I was looking for a relationship:)

Hello - I am going to try a consistent format for my blog to make it look prettier, more professional.

It's Tuesday and tomorrow starts the YART sale on Etsy. From June 10 - 14 I will have 8 items for sale. I have created a YART section in my shop. Check it out as there are some nice deals.

As you know, I am really into working with gold. I adore sterling, copper and brass, but there is just something magical about gold. This brings me to my poll. Bailey is doing very well considering she fell 9 feet a few days ago - talk about 9 lives. She fell about a month ago and did not injure herself.

I never made that necklace that I talked about last Friday as I was too busy creating my flower bracelet. This is probably the 1st piece that I created totally from scratch - cut sheet, wire, drew flowers and will eventually create the clasp (still deciding on what I want to do with that ). So...

What do you think? I really like it. I initially thought that I would just have flowers, no circle in the middle. Then I received my shipment from Monsterslayer (LOVE THAT STORE!!!) I decided to solder the circles on after I texturized them with my new hammer.

I will have a special bond with the person who eventually purchases this piece as I worked on this Fri - Sun and I am still staring at it:)

The Weekend

Hello!

Had quite a scare today, Bailey, my cocker who is 14 feel down about 9-10 feet!!!! Tom is replacing part of our deck and since she is blind in one eye she could not see that a board was missing and down she went!! Of course we all freaked out but looks like other than tearing a skin tag and a little limp all is well. Gave her some pain medicine and am restricting her exercise and will keep on eye on her. Those of you with dogs will appreciate the scariness of this.

What a nice day in Cleveland area! Wish the weather could stay this way forever!

Anyhow had a productive jewelry weekend - just posting one of my gold pieces as I do not want to bore you but check out the Etsy site for all of the new pieces!

Brother's Lounge (the morning after)

Good Morning!

Had a great time attemtping to sell my jewelry at Brother's lounge last night. It was there 1st ever ladies night and they had free manicures, makeover, great prices on martinis AND a woman selling Silpada.

I did not sell anything but had a lot of great comments and gave out a lot of biz cards. There were so many people who asked "you made all of this?" That made me feel good. I even had one woman who said that if she wore jewelry, that she would wear mine - I guess that is a compliment. Anyhow I am going back next week because it is a BLAST!!! Great good, drinks and music. PLUS there was a gentleman who was in a motorcycle club who was also an off duty police officer who came up to me and said "you have been here a while" I thought WOW someone was watching me:) Hey any attention as almost 43 from anyone is good attention!!!!!

Next week I am setting myself up closer to the bar - that may have a HUGE affect on sales:)

Hello!

Just about packed up for the "gig" tomorrow night. Sort of dissapointed that the bags I order have not arrived - that means that I will have to purchase more - I am trying to create a "brand image" and use either black or fuschia colored organza bag with a ribbon around the bag.

I am also excited that 4 of my friends will there tomorrow - totally excited going to "use" them as my wingmen to sell my jewelry!! Hey - this was NOT my idea it was my husbands - go figure.

Want to find a class on how to enamel - anyone have any suggestions???

I am also getting into gold - this is totally not good do you know how much gold is - check out the prices YIKES!

Happy Monday -

Hope everyone had a great Monday - in the "real" word today means monthly reports, looking at results and planning for June. However, in blogland it means being excited for sharing the little things on life - like selling your 1st piece on Etsy!!! I have included a picture of the bracelet.

On a not so positive note, my daughter managed to damage her car over the weekend. Not seriousy, but nonetheless, damage. Oh - she has no idea what happened!!!Oh well she will just have to live with it:(

Studio

Hello!

I am so excited - I have one follower and I have had positive feedback on my 1st post. Follower, that sound sort of like this is a cult - oh well!

Ok so I figured that it would be nice for folks to see my "studio" since I am, afterall, making art/jewelry. I also thought that it would be nice to show pics of my "girls." For those of you who do not really know me, when I say my girls, I am referring to my dogs.

I know, I know, what about my "real" girl, Rachael, well she is 16 so need I say more?? Plus she just got her 1st car today so I will not be seeing her for a while.

Ok back to my "studio." As you can see from my pictures it is state of the art. I know for someone who is really just starting out, it is truly amazing. Yes, my work space is in between a refrigerator and a shower. This is really convenient so that when I am in the work mode, I never have to leave the basement. Yes, my lovely "studio" is in the basement.

Hello and welcome to my blog.

I have been thinking of a reason for why I created this blog and I figured it out. I am the kind of person who needs immediate feedback or maybe not feedback but I want to show people what I make. Just ask any of my friends who are e-mailed pictures at 3am or are sent picture messages of what I just created at 7am on a Monday morning. With a blog I can post these pictures to my blog so that people can follow along with me when they want and not when I want them to.

Ok so will this blog only be for pictures of my jewelry? How boring - I think at least, plus there is my website and ETSY for that. I want to involve people in decisions in marketing and creating my jewelry. I also want to talk about my other passion - dogs. I love them - all of them!!!!
